African Liberation Youth Forum Explores the Shared Legacy of Arab and African Liberation Movements

The African Legacy Foundation convened an online session of the African Liberation Youth Forum, bringing together young Africans from across the continent to reflect on one of the defining questions of Africa’s liberation journey: the historic partnership between the Arab revolutionary project and African struggles for freedom.

Led by Dr. Moussa Ibrahim, Executive Secretary of the Foundation, the session examined the contributions of Gamal Abdel Nasser, the Algerian Revolution, and Muammar Gaddafi to the liberation of Africa and the enduring vision of a united, sovereign continent.

Participants engaged in an open and critical discussion on the shared history of North and Sub Saharan Africa, challenging colonial narratives that sought to divide the continent and weaken the bonds forged through common struggle. The dialogue reaffirmed that Africa’s liberation was never confined by geography, language, or ethnicity, but was built through solidarity across the continent.

The session reflected on Egypt’s support for African liberation movements under Gamal Abdel Nasser, the transformative role of the Algerian Revolution as a sanctuary for freedom fighters, and Libya’s contribution under Muammar Gaddafi to advancing Pan African cooperation, supporting liberation movements, and promoting continental unity through African institutions.

Young participants also examined the achievements, challenges, and lessons of these historic experiences, recognizing that Africa’s future depends on understanding its own history and preserving the ideals of unity, sovereignty, and self determination that inspired generations of liberation leaders.

Through initiatives such as the African Liberation Youth Forum, the African Legacy Foundation continues to cultivate a new generation of Africans committed to carrying forward the legacy of liberation, strengthening Pan African consciousness, and advancing the unfinished mission of a free, united, and sovereign Africa.
